1º Bach. Unit 2. Communicative photocopy. Part 1

    THESE EXERCISES ARE ALREADY CORRECTED

    UNIT 2. PART 1. EXERCISES 1- 12

  1. I would rather deal with a human, because I like talking to people and human interaction in general; you can know them and have a relation with them, maybe only a formal one, or even a friendship. I also like people doing jobs because if the job assistant or the waiter is a robot, less people will have the possibility to find a job, and I think that is bad for us, humans.

  2. There are four photos showing us different aspects of technology. In photo 1 there is a ·D face which is being printed, in photo 2, a woman is using virtual glassess, in photo 3 I can see a mobile phone and different icons showing us how we can use it online: for shopping, chatting, money transactions... and finally, in photo 4 there is a space satellite orbiting the Earth.

  3. Read the texts about the different robots (p. 20).

  4. (“Opt”).
    1. OceanOne is an underwater robot which has different uses, like exploring the coral reefs. It can do this because it has hands with sensors so that the robot controller can feel what the robot touches.
    2. Snakerobot is the ideal robot to slide into small places, such as pipes and tubes. It is perfect for this because it has got a flexible body that moves by changing his shape. It is used for places that people can´t access and it is valuable in search and rescue operations.
    3. A drone is the latest trend in tech hobbies. They fly by remote control and they have cameras so that pilots can watch live videos. They are also controversial because of privacy and safety issues.
    4. Megabot MK II is used in robot fights, a hi-tech sport. It is a giant robot, which is 5 metres tall and weighs 5,500 kilos. It is equipped with giant paintballs and it can shoot them at 160 kph. Two pilots ride inside the robot.
  1. Read Sandy’s presentation on p. 21 (“Opt.”)

  2. One advantage is that you learn things that interest or are useful for you, like music if you go to a Music school or English if you go to an English academy. Another advantage is that you learn in smaller groups and you can participate more in the activities. There are also disadvantages, for example you need extra time for them, which you may need for your homework, or you have to organise yourself to be in different places, sometimes far away from each other.
  3. Read the text “Techno Bytes” on p. 23.

  4. Pronounce.

  5. Pronounce.

  6. In the first photo there is some land, a wild reserve in Africa, with some zebras running. The photo goes with the text because this one describes how drones can help solve the problem of poaching endangered animals in African wild reserves.
In the second photo I can see a man flying a drone near some mountains. The photo is related to a part of the text where the writer explains how drones are used in search and rescue operations in rough terrains.
The third photo shows us a couple, a bride and a bridegroom, and is related to the text as this one explains the use of drones in weddings, to get original photos, shooting things from original viewpoints.
In the fourth photo there is a drone and the photo is next to this text because all of it deals with drones and their possible uses.

  7. Melanie got a drone as a Christmas present and, after some practice, she became skilful at flying it. So she spent the weekend flying it with a friend who was also keen on drones and was going to buy one too. But their hobby had a downside because her neighbour accused them of spying on her and became furious when the drone landed on her flowers. They need to be more careful.
Until recently, Barry used his drone to photograph the mountains but, when a woman went missing there, he used it to help (to) search for her, and they found her safe and sound. Afterwards, he joined SWARM, who are some volunteers that use drones to help in search and rescue operations. Drones are ideal for this because they are small, fast and less costly than helicopters. There are 1,500 SWARM pilots in 46 countries and their numbers are increasing. Barry likes that he is saving lives with his hobby.

Michael works with drones in Africa, where there is a problem with poaching endangered animals like elephants and rhinos. Drones are helping because they fly over wild reserves and track poachers, so they can catch them in the act. They use a silent type of drone because poachers don´t notice them. These drones are also equipped with special cameras because most poachers work at night. Michael hopes that perhaps poaching will become a thing of the past thanks to drones.

Lisa is a professional photographer and she wanted to shoot things from a fresh viewpoint, that is why she started using drones at weddings. During the first time that she used them, she took photos of the couple and their guests and the drone flew over them. The photos were stunning, so more and more clients call her. But she says that you need to make sure that the pilot that operates them is skilled, as (because) drones may crash and injure people.
